Harry Potter
Event Worn At: B&N Harry Potter Party: 6/20/03, Cosplay.com Picnic II, POA Premiere, Anime Expo 2004
Chara Info: Harry Potter first meets the dementors in The Prisoner of Azkaban, the third book in the series. They are the grotesque, faceless guards of the Azkaban Wizard's Prison, and suck the happiness in any area they inhabit. Harry has no bigger fear than the dementors.
Why It?: I needed a costume for the Order of the Phoenix pre-release party. I did the dementor because it was easy and I wanted to be scary for once (::cough:: intentionally scary, I mean :P).
The Story: Well, there's not much to tell on this guy. It was pretty easy. I used Simplicity #9887 for the cloak, and modified it slightly (I sewed the front shut). There are seven yards of black twill contained in this one simple costume O_O. Thank goodness for Joann's Fabric Bonanza (ie -- the cheap fabric area XD).
To hide my face I sewed three layers of black Casa sheer to the top of the hood. It tucks down inside the front of the cloak. My vision is slighly blurred and darkened, but it's impossible to see my face from the outside! I love it!
The dementors are said to have scaly, slimy hands. OK, I didn't have scaly, slimy hands, but I did have gross-looking hands ^.-. I used my old Sailor V gloves and speckled them with black acrylic paint.
This costume takes all of two minutes to get into ^_______^. No pretty makeup, no complicated binding, and no painful aspects! The only bad thing about this costume is that it's so hot and heavy. It's not easy to breathe behind the sheer fabric, especially when you have a bit of a cold ;_;.
I ended up wearing this only half the time at the party. My cousin wore it for the other half, and I don't know what was more fun -- being the dementor, or watching Jess enjoying herself XD. I ended up making another Dementor cloak for Robbie, which we used to terrorize at the Cosplay.com Picnic in 04 ^^.
The costume was worn AGAIN at Anime Expo 2004, but not as a Dementor. My friend Jason played a "Random Demon" in our Chrno Crusade skit. It was a big hit XD.
